4 Tips to store coffee beans and why we need to store them well

Greetings, this is CATCH MIND. Today we will discuss about the method to store coffee beans and why we need to store them well.

Coffee ages every day after roasting even though the CO2 escaped from beans during the roasting process. In order to maintain the coffee's characteristics for longer period even after roasting, you have to store them with extra care.

As the storage period gets longer, the problem is not just in losing a flavor and fragrance but, also in oxidation. When the time of oil in the bean being exposed to air gets longer, the taste deteriorates and may as well harm your health.

Expiration date after the roasting is,

According to Starbucks, the expiration date for coffee bean is 8 months after roasting. Moreover, the books state it can be as long as 12 to 24 months.

However, no matter how well you store them, you cannot stop the taste deterioration and oxidation process.

The fragrance and taste start to decrease from 2-3 week after roasting so, it's good to consume beans within that period.

Please be aware before purchasing the beans that most of the big franchise café tend to sell beans without indicating the roasting date. Also, coffee ages faster in summer as the weather provide perfect condition for oxidation.

How Should I Store the Coffee Beans?

4 tips in storing the beans are as follow.

1. If you opened the the package, you must try your best to seal it as tight as you can.

You may store the beans in a special coffee container or sealed container. The container is not expensive so if you enjoy drinking coffee often, I recommend you to buy one.

2. Avoide the sun light.

The sunlight is one reason to accelerate coffee's maturing, oxidizing and aging process. If you are storing the coffee in a transparent container, please keep it in a box or cover it with a paper to seal the container.

3. It is not recommended to store the coffee in a fridge.

Coffee is a food but it cannot be stored in the fridge as it may be cross-contaminated from the food inside. Although the foods are stored in a sealed container, it cannot stop the food smell from contaminating the coffee. Once you store the coffee inside the fridge, you cannot stop the coffee absorbing the moisture in the fridge.

If you must freeze the coffee, divide them into one portion size, keep it in a tightly sealed package and use after defrosting when you desire. But, I recommend not to store the coffee inside the fridge.

4. The Ideal condition to store the coffee beans is to "seal tight, and store in dry and dark place". This is the minimum standard for you to meet if you would like to store your coffee well.

Lastly,,,

There are controversial opinions on keeping the coffee inside fridge. Coffee is as food so, some day coffee taste better when it is stored in fridge. Howerer, I hope you would remember the three factors in storing the coffee once more, "Tight seal, dry and dark"
